After cooling off
from the 8k run, young Sean Holt (8k winner) and I (8k second
place!) were hiking up
to the Trabuco aid station (the 22.5 mile point in the 26.2 mile
race) to help out and cheer on the runners.
WOW! It was not even 3 hours since the Marathon started and we
spotted runners ALREADY coming down the long hill! In first
place was Jamie Murphy (age 34).
Jamie ended up
averaging 7 minutes and 13 seconds per mile for the entire
26.2 mile race! His first place overall winning time was
3:09:20! |
 |
Next down the hill
were Jim and Carol Pivonka. As I was taking their pictures,
they yelled out that they were not in THE race and just completed
the Horsethief Canyon Half Marathon route for a workout.
Heck, it is a great trail run shot with mountains in the
background - so why not use it. |
 |
Jim and Carol
Pivonka.
I found out later
they were Randy and Vicki's super volunteers who camped out the
night before and were staying again that night to help with all
the cleanup.
Thank you Jim &
Carol from everyone. |
 |
Alex Hull (age 35)
was second - some 10 minutes behind Jamie.
He finished in
3:15:11 for a 7:27 Pace. |
 |
An airborne Scott
McKenzie (age 47) in third place some 5 minutes behind Alex.
Scott finished in
3:17:28 - an average pace of 7:32 per mile. |
 |
In fifth was Rob
McNair (age 48). He looked faster than any of the previous
four runners. Rob was really sprinting down that hill!
Rob's time was
3:25:55 for a 7:51 pace. |
 |
Michael Nowacki (age
47) came in sixth with a 3:42:11 time for the Marathon - an 8:28
minute per mile pace. |
 |
Jeff Wong (age 44)
cruises into the aid station area. |
 |
Jeff leaves the
Trabuco aid station after a brief respite. He came in 8th
overall in 3:48:43 - a 8:43 minute per mile pace.
He is looking
forward to that last 3.7 miles and all downhill! |
 |
Chuck Sochaskey (age
40) zooms out of the aid station. His finishing time was
3:52:59 for 10th place overall. |
 |
Kim Gimenez (age 38)
is the first woman runner we spot coming up that final climb to
the Trabuco aid station.
Her time turned
out to be 3:55:21 for the entire race. Kim placed 11th
overall and first place overall female. Awesome!
The last 3.7
miles is all downhill after the Trabuco aid station.
Whoopee! |
 |
Margaret Human (age
38) is the second female marathoner to show up.
Margaret finished
in 4:03:03 and earned 12th place overall and 2nd overall in
woman's . |
 |
Is Margaret going to
be glad to be done with this final uphill of not?
"The face of
quite desperation." The drama of the struggle shows the
intensity of this grueling ordeal. |
 |
Wait - 10 seconds
later and she is smiling and laughing? Talk about a fast
recovery. Must be due to the charming, friendly, hard
working aid station volunteers! |
 |
Trabuco
aid station
volunteers:
On the far left
is Sean Holt, 16 year old winner of the 8k. Sean is with
workers (left to right) Jim Grant, Dennis Huish and Ham Radio
operator (?).
This is the 3.5
mile & 22.5 mile refill spot. |
 |
Jeff Blair (age 38)
stridin' up that last uphill. Jeff cruised in at 4:05:45, 14th
overall |
 |
#67 Peter Penland
(age 46) looks happy and healthy coming up that last hill.
He finished in
4:17:45 for 22nd place overall. |
 |
(?) , Rick Waterman
(43 - 4:25:41) and Paige Baker (age 34 - 3rd female overall winner
at 4:22;28) end up walking up that last nasty bit of
uphill. |
 |
Jennifer Buckley
(age 44) and Lisa O'Leary (age 38) in great spirits as they leave
the aid station and head down the last hill.
Jennifer finished in
4:26:02, 27th overall and 4th overall female.
Lisa finished in 4:27:00, 28th overall and 5th overall female. |
 |
Hartmut Frenzel (age
34) leads Michelle Barton (age 31) up that last hill to the aid
station.
Michelle finished in 4:27:41, 30th overall and 6th overall female.
Hartmut finished in 4:34:48, 40th overall. |
 |
Michelle (my
daughter) swoops right by the aid station and keeps right on
going.
I zipped my camera in my hip pouch and planned to run along with
her to help her keep motivated after the ordeal of the first 22.5
miles. What a joke. After 5 minutes of downhill "togetherness"
she took off. My heart monitor was running between 163 and 165
(Max "theoretical" heart rate for someone my age is 157). I kept
that rate going all the way down the hill and I think she still
got to the finish 10 minutes before me! |
