Thursday July
18, 2002 Hiking up to Vogelsang High Sierra Camp at 10, 300'
elevation
Six
of us went to Vogelsang via the Rafferty Creek Trail. 7
miles up to 10, 300 feet elevation. We got rained on AND
hailed on quite a bit, but it made it that more interesting for
Ashley and Heather.
The girls with Jim
and Mary Ann. Still hailing and raining!
As we got further
along the bad weather dissipated. Vogelsang Peak in the
background.
We set up camp at
Fletcher Lake (along the shore on the far right). Here we
are hiking up a short distance to Townsley Lake.
Heather, Ashley and
Bob above Fletcher Lake.
This is Townsley lake - beautiful Alpine
splendor. The day ended perfectly clear. We even got
to take in an astronomy lecture that night given by ranger
Savannah.
BACK at Toulomne
Meadows! Rory, Michelle and Sierra spent the morning inside
their tent. By early afternoon, it was clearing up.
Michelle went for a quick jaunt to the top of Lembert Dome (shown
here).
25 minutes total from the campsite
to the top is mighty fast! Proof she made it is the picture
Michelle took of herself at the very top.
Another shot with a
reflection in a pond. (Looks like more black clouds!)
Weather finally
looks reasonable. Time to take Sierra on a little hike.
This is along the river that is just a few hundred feet from the
campsite.
Toulomne Meadows.
Hiking through
the meadows.
This is the walled
area around the natural SODA SPRINGS. Sierra was really
enthralled with the bubbles coming out of the small puddles of
water.
Little miss energy
takes off. Back side of Lembert Dome in the background.
Five minutes later
and it is time for the rain coats again. That night it
cleared up once and for all, so they got to enjoy the outdoor
fireside talk about bears.
