March 28, 2002 Grandpa Doug's 63 mile bike ride on his 63rd Birthday!
Almost home. Biked with old friend Jim Nilsen. We rode out to Newport Beach, then to Huntington Beach and Seal beach along the coastal bike path. Cool and overcast, but great clear views of Catalina Island some 26 miles off shore. Had bagels in Huntington Beach and lunch at Ruby's on the end of the pier in Seal Beach. The waitressess even brought me a piece of cake with a candle!
Got back near the Irvine area and had to extend my loop to Sand Canyon and Portola first to get all the miles I wanted in. The bike computer reading at the end! 63.08 miles! I had to go one extra block at the very end to get the desired 63 mile distance. Average speed was only 13 mph - took it easy.
