Dec 25, 2001 Christmas
Morning
Laguna Canyon
Half Marathon
run #12 for 2001.
Grandpa Doug is
cruising along Laguna Canyon Road about a mile from finishing the
13.1 mile distance.
Just
about to cross the finish line at the Laguna Beach Festival of the
Arts parking lot. Karen and her mom, Gladys drove and met
Doug to bring a change of clothes and his bicycle.
1:50:55 for the 13.1 miles works out to be 8 minutes 28 seconds
average per mile. Nowhere near the 8:03 per mile that Doug
averaged on the FLAT 6.2 mile Dana Point Turkey Trot course on
Thanksgiving morning (while chasing speedy Michelle). The
scenic canyon route from Irvine to Laguna Beach however is not
flat - it is an uphill climb for the first 6 miles and then a nice
gradual downhill the rest of the way.
For
years we have used the Festival grounds restrooms for changing
into dry clothes. After unloading the bike and grabbing a
quick munchie, it is time for the ride home.
Discovered long
time ago that cycling home at an easy pace (different muscles)
works the lactic acid buildup out of one's running muscles.
One feels fine afterwards, instead of dragging all day and then
feeling somewhat sore and stiff the next day.
Adios! Leaving to bike back home and a Christmas morning
breakfast test of the new Belgian Waffle maker that Gladys gave
Karen! MMMM!
