Day 4 of 7
Day 4 - Day hike to
60 Lakes Basin +662', +4 miles (26.1 miles total)
Today we really
goofed off. Did an exploratory fun, easy day hike (means no
heavy packs) up to 60 Lakes Basin. Had lunch up there and
did some off trail rock scrambling to get closer views of Fin
Dome.
Middle Rae Lake (elevation 10,538') with view of Fin Dome (11,963' to its
top!).
Since this campsite is
over 10,000 feet we are not allowed to have our usual toasty camp fire.
Colorful meadow at South end of Lake
Rock art we built near the bear box. Note the "lucky" horse shoe at the
top that Doug found back at Wood's Creek.
Night time at 10,000 feet. One's sleeping bag makes a great outer
layer when it gets cool out there.
Colorful plants around the lake.
The start of our 4 mile day hike to 60 Lakes Basin.
As we climbed higher we got great views of Upper Rae Lake and its islands.
Had to get this shot of the two trees forming an arch highlighting Fin
Dome.
"Shark" Fin Dome from up close. We went scrambling off trail for an hour
to get this shot.
Strange - almost dry pond as we descended from our Fin Dome view point.
Clear, clear water. Darn - we forgot to get pictures of our snow
cone making break. Yummy......
View of lower Rae Lake from the top.
View across the lakes as we descend from 60 Lakes Basin.
Great view of our campsites. We could see our tents from up here.
More colorful plant life.
An abundance of color!
Chris and Doug banished Clark to an even nicer view tent site (something
about snoring too loud).
Painted Lady mountain in the center. Glen Pass makes its way through
the lower saddle to the right of that peak. Tomorrow's climb to Glen
Pass will make for an interesting day!
The outcropping of rocks below our campsite.
