Backpack trip to Minaret Lake
Day 3 - Tuesday August 9, 2005

Tuesday August 9th was spent doing a day hike to explore the unmaintained trail between Minaret lake and Lake Ediza that maybe would enable us to backpack up and over to Iceberg Lake and then down to Lake Ediza.  The idea was to do a loop hike rather than an out an back trip.  Michelle, Sierra, Dave and I set out at 10 AM.

Sierra on the trail on the far side of Minaret lake

The gorgeous view of Minaret Lake as we ascended.

Sierra on the trail and full of energy!

The three generations.

Sierra slowly makes her way up the very steep rugged path to the pass.

Craggy dead trees at the pass.

Soon as we crested the pass we could see Cecile Lake and lots of residual snow!  Michelle & Sierra got to play!

Cecile Lake at 10,200 feet elevation.

This gorgeous little lake still had a small iceberg floating in it.

We would have to cross the steeply angled snow to go any further. The 4 of us did just that.

After making the 1st section Grandpa Doug said we are turning back .  One teeny slip and instantly down into the icy, icy water.

Dave, the experienced mountain man went on ahead alone to see how difficult it would be to make it to Iceberg Lake.

Dave's Excellent Solo Adventure!

On to Iceberg Lake and back around the snowier side of Cecile Lake.

Dave at the far end of Cecile lake.  You can see our out and back route across the snow marked in red.

Iceberg lake was the next lake beyond Cecile.  Lots of snow and ice cover.

Way too treacherous to go down that route without ice axes and crampons.

One the way back - here is the main snow field on the far side of Cecile Lake.

Back up and over from Iceberg lake and then down to Cecile lake

Back to Cecile Lake
While Dave was adventuring, Michelle, Sierra and I worked our way down the steep trail from Cecile Lake.

Leaving Cecile Lake and heading down.

Yikes!  It's a long way down.

A half hour later: "Wow- stop Mom - we see Dave!"

Dave did that whole treacherous loop to Iceberg Lake and caught up with us (see red circle).

We stopped for a photo on the way back to Minaret Lake.

Almost back to the campsite.

Grandpa and Sierra take a nap after that tough day hike!
Dave's Excellent Adventure #2!
Later that afternoon Dave went exploring to Doghouse Lake and beyond. (What energy!)

The range of jagged peaks called the Minarets.

Dave took this photo from the saddle of the left most Minaret pair.  Our campsite is to the far right and next to the lake.

Dave's view from WAAAY up!

Dave found another near frozen over lake.

Rather unusual for August!

View of Minaret lake on the way back.

The "ghost" of the Sierra's.

Almost back as the late afternoon shadows start rolling in.
