Monday Sightseeing
January 12, 2015

Karen & Doug Malewicki took the San Diego Trolley (Orange Line then the Red Line) to get to Old Town to meet the SSHS57 gang for dinner

Old Town is a historic area of San Diego that dates back to the 1820's.  This is the original settled area of San Diego.  Old Town is listed in the USA National Register of Historic places.

 Gaslamp Quarter district entrance.

Lots of bars and restaurants. Nightlife central for young adults.

Karen & I started at the Worldmark, Balboa Park from the other end of this 16 block long historic area.

Karen strolling along the Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade Park walkway that parallels the trolley tracks.  It is directly across from the San Diego Convention Center.

To the right is a piece of "art" named "Breaking the Chains" along that same path.
We had lunch at the Edgewater Grill in nearby Seaport Village.

ABOVE is the view from the roof top patio at the Worldmark Balboa park.

To the LEFT is "The Children's Park" (on the Promenade Park walk).

Upper RIGHT is our sunset view from the top floor of Wyndham's Inn at the Park (6th & Spruce)

Lots of flights landing at Lindberg Field came in low & directly overhead as we walked to Lefty's!

Dr. Jerry wore his South Shore High School T-Shirt that he got at the 45th Reunion in Chicago in 2002.

Doug tearing into the genuine Chicago style pizza!

Denny LOVES Lefty's deep dish.

Fay & Denny enjoying a monster meal. They drove down from Palos Verdes for the 3 days.

Lefty's - a must for Chicago visitors.

Another great meal at reasonable prices.

View of San Diego skyline atnight.

Thursday afternoon    January 15, 2015 San Diego to Irvine AMTRAK train scenery
(These next photos are for Dr. Jerry & Beth Brodkin, who have been talking about trying Amtrak
to visit a cousin in Irvine as a way to avoid fighting the traffic congestion on the 5 freeway!)

The Santa Fe Depot is minutes away from Seaport Village, the Midway, Convention Center and Gas Lamp District.

Our Amtrak Surfliner arriving.

All aboard!

Karen relaxing and enjoying the view from our upper level window.

The view of the Pacific Ocean as the train approaches Encinitas.

My neighbor & workout buddy for 30 years, retired US Marine Major Bob Johnson, timed his train ride back home to join us.  Bob went down to have brunch in Oceanside with fellow retired Marines.

Quite a bit of the track is close to the Pacific Ocean.  Great views!

Way off in the distance is Catalina Island some 26 miles away.

Approaching San Clemente Pier

(Our 49th Mini on September 11, 2011 was held at the Fisherman's restaurant on this pier).
